She becomes a cumin-seed addict i must admit, i’ve never known one of those Rumi, labeled gifted in kindergarten, becomes subject to the grim home teaching of her father, Mahesh, a professor of mathematics at the University of Swansea in Wales. I felt I was reading descriptions instead of internal experiences of consciousness. I think the simplicity through all of this makes it a giftwd book. Her gift for mathematics causes Rumi to often feel isolated from her fellow students.
This interpretation of the value of education – particularly prevalent among the Indian diaspora – understands that it can bring lalwabi but also imagines that freedom can remain firmly leashed to family expectations. But Lalwani, a BBC documentary filmmaker, is a more subtle writer, and she’s working on a much bigger canvas. But as Rumi grows older, Lalwani strips the comedy away, and “the sodden misery of the whole thing” weighs on the novel more and more.
The book felt disjointed, as if Lalwani was trying to cover too many bases. Her dad told her not to let go of her dream and told her to make him proud because whatever she became was something that kept her happy just like Rumi.

To the end each character stays very real. The only problem is I got really bored at the beginning and it took me longer to read because of that. Which, by the by, is totally cool. Rumi’s mother Shreene feels ever more distanced from her daughter as Rumi is forced to study the prison-like regime reminding Shreene of a similar one enforced when the newly married couple first immigrated and the only way she can relate to her daughter is by repeating the trite Indian sayings that peppered her own upbringing and for which she finds poor English translations.
May 24, YoSafBridg rated it really liked it. But despite their best efforts to step around these clich? What’s particularly interesting in G ifted is the way Lalwani forces her characters to contend with cultural stereotypes.
And yet, I liked it. With parents who’ve controlled her to that extent up until then?
However, she knows her age down to the seconds. An impressionable child, who is living in two cultures, yet is complete withdrawn from both. It asks a lot of really important questions, such as, “When is it appropriate to force a child to explore their talents, and when does this turn into abuse?
In the end, the intense expectations of a family with everything to prove will be a combustible ingredient as an intelligent but naive girl is thrust into the adult world before she has time to grow up. To some extent, Gifted reminds me of Josiah Bunting’s All Loves Excellinga melodramatic tale about a girl who works herself to death at a prestigious prep school.

Early in the book, when Rumi is only 5, her teacher insists on visiting her parents at home to announce the exciting news that “Rumi is a gifted mathematician! We each had to dunk a hand in and take out a head and name the parts that were exposed in the section. Books by Nikita Lalwani.
The author did better getting inside the gicted of the parents of the main character, especially the mother. Her traditional Indian parents have a very strict study schedule for her to ensure that she fulfills her talent, and they dream of her becoming the youngest age 14 student ever to pass her O levels and then go onto Oxford University.
I thought this book was very inspirational. Also by Nikita Lalwani.
