Fortunately, most of the saccharine sentimentality is diluted by heaping doses of really sick nastiness at which Dumas excelsincluding two chapters that blew my socks off and made me long to be a much better reader. I started reading The Count of Monte Christo a long time ago and gave up because the beginning seemed banalyou know a beautiful maiden and handsome young man threatened by people who want to tear them apart, it just sounded too much like a romance to keep me interested. It is one grfjja my vivid memories of my teenage years having been one of BBC TV’s superb Sunday teatime serials which were a staple television diet at that time – along with the “Dr Who” serials on a Saturday. Instead he signed a deal with NBC to make it as a TV movie, although the film would be released theatrically in Europe.
